The former president of the National Rifle Association (NRA) was labeled as one of the “Most Influential Americans Over 80” in a ranking released over the Christmas holiday.

Marion Hammer, a longtime pro-gun lobbyist who serves as executive director of the Unified Sportsmen of Florida, landed on Slate‘s “80 Over 80” list that dropped on Dec. 22. A longtime Second Amendment advocate, Hammer was featured alongside a pool of other American titans who were pioneers in their respective fields. Some of the big names on the list include Buzz Aldrin, Warren Buffet, James Earl Jones and Hank Aaron.

Slate, which has been criticized for its views and liberal editorial stances, highlighted Hammer’s work preserving people’s firearm rights and touted her longevity as a lobbyist for the nation’s oldest gun-rights group.

“Many of the most extreme pro-gun laws in America—“stand your ground” and concealed carry laws among them—began in Florida, quietly shepherded through the legislative process there by the NRA’s most powerful lobbyist,” the magazine said of Hammer.

 

“Hammer, an NRA board member and formerly the organization’s first female president, is often described as a tiny, pistol-packing grandmother, but that cutesy depiction fails to reflect the legacy of her 40 years’ work: Her trend-setting bills repeatedly shifted norms around firearms, enshrining unregulated gun use as a sacred individual right.”
