New readership records set in 2022 at The Capitolist

by | Jan 7, 2023

With books closed on 2022 and the data now in, The Capitolist set four new records over the last 12 months, including new high marks for total content published, total email subscribers, total users and total pageviews.  Since launching in mid-2016, The Capitolist has tracked those metrics and made them available to sponsors and advertisers in order to provide a realistic picture of the news site’s reach and influence at the nexus of business, politics and policy in the Sunshine State.

Over the last 12 months, our team published a 20 percent increase in total content output, which includes all stories published on the site by our news team, but also includes opinion submissions and syndicated content from third party providers who match our business, politics and policy focus.

Our distribution network shifted dramatically over the course of the year, as our primer traffic driver, our 40,000 strong Facebook audience, took a backseat to our flagship morning email, The ReCap, and it’s afternoon sister companion, Coffee Break as our high-value subscriber count exceeded 48,000 in December, up 84 percent over the period. Combined, we sent our original content, along with other newsworthy items, millions of times over the last year.

The increase in both content output and distribution also netted more traffic to the site. Total pageviews grew 3 percent over the last year, while our total user base expanded by 14% year over year. Our content focus, based on the total number of stories published on each topic, is concentrated heavily in the areas that matter most to our readers, ranked in order of total stories published in each category:

  • Politics

  • Education

  • Healthcare

  • Storm Coverage

  • Economy

  • Legislative

  • Insurance

  • Real Estate

  • Legal

  • Energy

  • COVID

  • Miscellaneous

As we begin 2023, we’re already making more changes to deliver higher quality content, and more of it, ahead of the legislative session that begins in March. If you’d like to learn more about how to leverage our audience to get your message out, we’d love to share more about our work.
