President Trump takes a break from his European visit to endorse Rep. Matt Gaetz

President Donald Trump took time out of his visit to England earlier today to endorse one his biggest supporters in Congress — U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz.

“Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida is one of the finest and most talented people in Congress,” the president posted in a tweet early Friday morning. ““Strong on crime, the border, illegal immigration, the Second Amendment, our great military and vets, Matt worked tirelessly on helping to get our massive tax cuts. He has my full endorsement!”

Gaetz represents Florida’s 1st Congressional District and faces primary opposition, although he’s expected to win reelection.

Gaetz, a freshman in Congress, serves on the U.S. House Judiciary Committee which has been looking into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

He is close to the Freedom Caucus and has been part of the right-wing effort to tear down the work of the special counsel. In November, he helped introduce a high-profile resolution to remove Mueller from the investigation. He has been a supporter of claims of a “deep state” that is out to get Trump.

The president’s endorsement of Gaetz is the second Trump has made in high profile political races in Florida this year. Last month, he announced his “full endorsement” of U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis for governor.

“Congressman Ron DeSantis, a top student at Yale and Harvard Law school, is running for Governor of the Great State of Florida,” Trump posted on Twitter Friday morning. “Ron is strong on Borders, tough on Crime & big on Cutting Taxes – Loves our Military & our Vets. He will be a Great Governor & has my full Endorsement!”

DeSantis’ campaign announced Thursday that Donald Trump, Jr., would make a campaign stop in Orlando next Wednesday in support of DeSantis. Gaetz is scheduled to appear with Trump and DeSantis during the visit.
