Rick Scott says he’s “likely” to challenge electoral votes in Pennsylvania

by | Jan 6, 2021

U.S. Senator Rick Scott said on Wednesday that he’ll “likely” vote to challenge electoral votes when Congress meets to count electoral votes confirming Joe Biden‘s victory.

In a statement released on Twitter, Scott said he has heard the concerns regarding the 2020 election from his constituents, many of which he shares. Scott said he’ll listen to all arguments and evidence, but believes that the election in Pennsylvania is of particular concern.

“During today’s proceedings, I will listen to any and all objections that are raised. I will pay careful attention to the evidence and arguments presented by both sides,” Scott said in a statement.

“The situation in Pennsylvania is of particular concern to me, and I will likely vote to sustain the objection to their slate of electors.”

Scott’s statement comes as Republican members, 13 senators and more than 100 representatives, say they plan to challenge Biden’s victory in the November election when Congress holds a joint session to certify the Electoral College vote today.

Scott added that “the actions of the Governor’s Administration and courts in Pennsylvania pose a serious threat to the integrity of future elections.

Republicans and President Donald Trump made numerous legal attempts to overturn the election. Most challenges, however, were thrown out at the state level with the U.S. Supreme Court declining to weigh in on the controversial presidential election.

Wednesday’s statement marks a shift in Scott’s decision to get on board with others citing election fraud. Scott had been largely silent and had not indicated whether he would join other Republican officials in objecting to the certifications of the Electoral College, which Biden won with 306 votes to Trump’s 232.

Scott’s Florida colleague, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, has yet to comment on if he’ll accept the election results.
