Assembling on the steps of the Old State Capitol building and extending for half a city block, hundreds of educators and teaching specialists from around the state converged to rally for higher teacher pay and more investment in education, even as Governor Ron DeSantis has called for an increase in starting teacher pay, and Republican leaders have boosted per-student education spending every single year since 2011.
Many of those in attendance were liberal political activists touting progressive slogans, and even some toted and posed with a banner promoting socialist presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
There was at least one Trump supporter at the rally, easily spotted because he held a 20-foot tall “Trump 2020” flag. A handful of teachers posed with him for photographs. Most kept their distance.
