Senator Shevrin Jones has announced his candidacy for the chairmanship of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Executive Committee, with the backing of local and national Democrat leaders.

Sen. Shevrin Jones declared his intention on Tuesday to seek the chairmanship of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Executive Committee (DEC).

According to a prepared release, the announcement comes after several weeks of “encouragement from local, state, and national stakeholders and leaders.” Jones is currently running unopposed, and if elected, would serve in the role through the end of the year.

“We’ve seen what happens when we don’t invest in robust, focused outreach and take communities for granted,” Jones said. “It’s clear this moment calls for a reset for our Miami-Dade County party, so that we can re-elect Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and re-elect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to finish the job.”

At the time of the announcement, Jones received support from an array of South Florida officials including U.S. Congresswoman Rep. Federica Wilson, state Senator Jason Pizzo, and state Representatives Christopher Benjamin and Kevin Chambliss. At the local level, Jones garnered the backing of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and Miami-Dade County commissioners Danielle Cohen-Higgens, Eileen Higgins, and Kionne McGhee.

“I’m committed to working with organizers across the county as we rebuild and register voters, bring disengaged people back into the fold, engage with candidates in every corner of Miami-Dade, and increase Democratic turnout this fall,” Jones continued.

A vote will be held on April 26.

Jones currently represents Senate District 34 in the Florida Legislature, a role he has held since 2020. From 2012 to 2020, Jones served in the Florida House of Representatives.
