  • 3 out of 4 rural U.S. states have overpriced internet, while 3 out of 4 urban states get fair internet prices

Florida’s internet is the most overpriced among urban U.S. states, according to a new report from Surfshark.

The VPN service company released its new Internet Value Index (IVi),which analyzes which states are overpaying for their internet connections. According to the study, the Sunshine State ranked 29th in the U.S. by internet value.

Florida is surpassed by other urban U.S. states, such as New Jersey (1st), New York (3rd), Illinois (9th), and California (10th).

“Affordable and fast internet is crucial these days – schoolchildren need it to keep up with their homework and take part in online classes, and remote workers need it to perform their work effectively,” said Agneska Sablovskaja, Lead Researcher at Surfshark. “The study found that 3 out of 4 urban states have fair internet prices, but Florida doesn’t seem to fit into this tendency.”

Additionally, the study showed that the South has the most overpriced internet in the country. Florida is among the better-performing states in the region with an Internet Value Index of 0.54 (similar to the region’s average and 7% lower than the US average).

The report also highlighted that New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York boasted the best internet prices. While Mississippi, Wyoming and Arkansas have the most overpriced internet in the country.

The index is calculated by dividing each state’s internet speed by internet affordability. A state’s Internet Value index is influenced by many factors, such as economic position, population density, percentage of urban area, and whether a state is landlocked or not.
