Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed legislation authorizing the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport as President Donald J. Trump International Airport, following approval of the measure by the Florida Legislature earlier this year.
The legislation passed both chambers largely along party lines. The Senate approved the bill by a 25-11 vote after it passed the House 81-30. Republicans backing the proposal said the designation recognizes Trump’s connection to Palm Beach and his prominence as a Florida political figure. Democrats opposed the measure, arguing the airport’s name should remain a local matter and questioning whether the change serves a public policy purpose.
However, the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport is not automatic upon the bill’s signing. The change remains contingent on approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and on an agreement permitting Palm Beach County to use the Trump name for airport signage, marketing and branding.
Under the bill, that agreement must provide the county with a perpetual right to use the name at no cost. The bill also requires state and local government records created on or after July 1, 2026, to use the state-designated airport names.
Palm Beach County officials previously estimated the cost of implementing the renaming at about $5.5 million, including expenses tied to signage, branding and system updates.
