Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) believes in the power of passion, partnerships, and performance to drive student success and economic prosperity across Southwest Florida. As a young and dynamic institution, FGCU embraces adaptability and forward-thinking partnerships to ensure that students graduate ready to lead, create, and make an impact.
The State University System of Florida’s SUS 30 initiative charts an ambitious course for the future of higher education in the state, outlining a strategic vision that prioritizes student success, economic development, and cultivation of world-class talent. This strategic plan, crafted through the collaborative efforts of university leaders, trustees, and industry partners, reinforces Florida’s commitment to accessible, affordable, and innovative education.
FGCU plays a critical role in advancing the priorities of SUS 30. The university is expanding the pathway to opportunities for our students by strengthening existing workforce partnerships, cultivating new relationships that support our students, and driving regional economic impact — all while maintaining dedication to academic excellence.
With FGCU’s new five-year strategic plan, Innovating for Student Success: FGCU’s Journey to Excellence, the university is deepening its commitment to bridging education with opportunity.
And it’s working. For the second year in a row, FGCU’s nursing students have achieved the highest first-time pass rates in the state on the national licensure exam – a success also experienced by students graduating from FGCU’s occupational and physical therapy programs.
Also, the College of Education undergraduate and graduate-level programs have earned a 100% pass rate on all state certification exams, ensuring classroom educators, school counselors, and administrators of the Southwest Florida region’s K12 education system that graduated from FGCU are prepared for Day 1 on the job. These are just some of the many achievements that reflect the university’s passion for education and strong industry partnerships, matched by a relentless drive for performance at every level. Integrating hands-on experiences and career-focused learning positions FGCU’s graduates to meet Florida’s evolving
workforce needs.
To sustain this excellence and expand opportunities, FGCU is requesting $21.8 million in recurring operational funding from the Florida Legislature. These resources will fuel innovative education models, accelerate workforce readiness programs, and enhance entrepreneurial initiatives.
Additionally, this investment will strengthen FGCU's partnerships with local employers, making sure students gain hands-on experience and develop career-ready skills before they graduate.
These priorities align with SUS 30’s priority of preparing Florida’s graduates for the rapidly evolving job market.
Beyond academic programming, it’s crucial that we invest in state-of-the-art learning environments. FGCU’s proposed capital funding requests focus on enhancing learning environments to support its mission. Plans include modernizing Reed Hall, revitalizing the Wilson G. Bradshaw Library and Cohen Student Union, and creating a dedicated career preparation hub. We are also expanding our partnership with Babcock Ranch to develop a research and outreach center in Charlotte County, blending innovation with sustainability. These expansions align with SUS 30, reinforcing our commitment to student success, innovation, and
career readiness. By modernizing learning spaces and expanding research opportunities as we enhance on-campus life, we will keep FGCU a leader in higher education and economic development.
The power of the State University System lies in its collaborative approach. While each institution has unique strengths, SUS 30 reinforces our shared commitment to innovation and cooperation. By working together, we position Florida as a premier destination for higher education and workforce development.
At FGCU, our passion fuels student commitment, partnerships expand our reach, and performance drives our results. By aligning with SUS 30, we are not just growing — we’re leading the way in academic achievement, research breakthroughs, and student success.
FGCU Capitol Day was on March 25, and we called upon state leaders to support these initiatives, which will help FGCU empower its students and help strengthen the region’s economy, solidifying Florida’s position as a national leader in higher education. Together, we can open doors, create opportunities, and build a stronger future for Florida.
