Governor Ron DeSantis is heading to Boise, Idaho on Monday, reportedly as part of a campaign to build support for a federal Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which would require the federal government to spend no more than it collects in revenue.

DeSantis is leading a coalition of Republican governors supporting the amendment through the nonprofit Balanced Budget Now, which he launched alongside Idaho Gov. Brad Little and Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and introduced to the Republican Governors Association. The campaign seeks to promote a federal Balanced Budget Amendment either through congressional approval or a convention of states under Article V of the U.S. Constitution.

The effort began with a letter sent to Congress in January and signed by all 26 Republican governors in support of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, and urges Congress to enact spending reforms aimed at eliminating waste and reducing the national deficit.

The letter praised the federal initiative, led by Elon Musk, and stated that Republican governors “stand ready to help DOGE—and Congress—be successful.”

The governors’ letter argued in favor of fiscal practices in Republican-led states, noting balanced budgets, tax reductions, and debt repayment as strategies that have led to economic growth. Citing data from the National Association of Realtors and U.S. News & World Report, the letter claimed that eight of the ten top states for inbound migration and nine of the ten most affordable states for housing are led by Republican governors.

“As governors, we are responsible for balancing our state budgets and living within our means,” the letter read. “It is past time for Washington to live within its means too.”

The governors also signaled that amending the U.S. Constitution is the only direct way states can assist in balancing the federal budget, referencing Article V as a potential path forward.

Now, to advance the campaign, DeSantis and Little will hold a joint press conference Monday morning at the Idaho State Capitol in Boise, according to a media advisory issued by the Florida Governor’s Office. An article published by Idaho News 6 first reported that DeSantis will promote the Balanced Budget Now campaign.
