Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University, prompting a federal investigation and widespread condemnation of political violence. In response, Florida political leaders offered condolences and spoke against political violence.
Kirk, 31, was addressing a large crowd on campus as part of Turning Point USA’s “American Comeback Tour” when a single gunshot struck him in the neck. Witnesses said he collapsed as security rushed him from the stage. The shot was believed to have come from a nearby building roughly 200 yards away. By early afternoon, Kirk was transported to a hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead several hours later, confirmed by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social account.
Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and built it into one of the nation’s most visible conservative youth organizations, often drawing large crowds at college campuses and maintaining close ties with President Trump.
Sen. Rick Scott said “I am completely heartbroken by the tragic loss of my friend and fellow patriot, Charlie Kirk, in a despicable, targeted act of violence. Ann and I are praying for the Kirk family, his wife, young children, and the entire Turning Point community. Charlie started an incredible movement in our nation, inspiring millions of young Americans to be involved in the future of their country and make their voices heard. He was led by God and his faith, and believed in the American dream, the value of family, and the principles of our great nation. Charlie will be long remembered for his love of this great nation and the legacy he left.”
In a post on X, Gov. Ron DeSantis said that he and First Lady Casey DeSantis are “praying for his family,” and added that Kirk “was a warrior for liberty, and his murder is a tragedy for our nation.”
In a published statement, Republican National Committee Chairman and state Senator Joe Gruters said “Charlie Kirk was a father, husband, and dedicated patriot who spent his life defending conservative values and inspiring young Americans. Our hearts break for his wife, children, loved ones, and countless supporters across the country. The horrifying violence at Utah Valley University that took the life of Charlie Kirk is utterly appalling. Republicans and Democrats alike must stand united in condemning this brutality that has no place in America.”
The Democratic Party of Florida said “The Florida Senate Democratic Caucus grieves the death of Charlie Kirk. The rise of political violence in this country is deeply distressing, and we unequivocally condemn it in all forms. Our prayers are with Charlie’s family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably difficult time.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “Charlie Kirk’s commitment to America’s future generations and sense of patriotism will resonate for decades to come. May the Lord bless Charlie and his family.”
Republican gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Representative Byron Donalds said: “[Charlie Kirk] was not only an American political legend, but I am honored to have been able to call him my friend. He believed in the greatness of America, he believed in the power of conversation, and he fought to make our country a better place. Charlie, we will never forget you, we will carry on your legacy, and your impact will be felt for generations to come. God bless the Kirk family, and may Charlie rest in peace.”
Fellow gubernatorial candidate David Jolly added “The world stops when we hear of political violence. And it should. Prayers for Charlie Kirk right now, for our nation, and for our politics.”
